THE
PEOPLE
OF

An extraordinary walk through familiar streets – an intimate audio walk along Lavender Hill, Battersea.

Just moments from Clapham Junction, Lavender Hill in Battersea is a meeting and crossing point for all sorts of different people.Subverting the usual historical walking tour, The people of guides you along a well-trodden route, past convenience stores, nail salons, trendy cafes and late-night takeaways. As life carries on around you, tune into the voices of the people who keep this place alive.

The Labour councillor who has watched the street change over decades. The bank worker who travels in each day from Kent. The waiter attending a college that has changed his life. The art enthusiast who sees everything from an attic flat. The shopkeeper who feels most at home when alone…

The people of is created from a fascination with the ways  our daily lives depend on, and collide with, those we don’t really know. It explores the journeys we take, how we come to be somewhere and why we stay, and what it really means to share a street.

Made by artist group Quarantine, in collaboration with sound designer Fraser Owen, the audio walk brings together interviews with people who work on Lavender Hill, mapping their voices against a sonic landscape of found and composed sound, transforming the street into a live exhibition of people.
